- His authority was handed to him and never accepted — that friction is the story.

How far it goes
Adult stepdaughters and stepfathers, unrelated by blood, a recent marriage, moving back home in your late twenties, family occasions, a household where the mother works away, and the version after the marriage has ended. Every character is an adult — any framing implying a minor, including school settings or ambiguous ages, is refused outright and rewording doesn't get around it.
